Transfer Information

Transfer Information

Kishwaukee College offers Associate in Arts (A.A.) and Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees designed to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. These degrees include the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) General Education Core Curriculum, which satisfies the general education requirements at participating Illinois institutions. Completion of an A.A. or A.S. degree typically allows students to focus on their major coursework upon transfer.

Students pursuing an A.A. or A.S. at Kishwaukee College generally do not take major-specific courses until after transferring. However, students should meet with an academic advisor to select appropriate courses that align with their intended major and transfer institution.

Successful transfer requires early planning. Students should:

  • Decide on their intended transfer institution early in their college career.

  • Contact potential institutions for program-specific requirements.

  • Work with academic advisors to develop an educational plan that meets both Kishwaukee College degree requirements and transfer requirements.

  • Use transfer guides available on the Academic Advising webpage and resources such as www.itransfer.org

Transfer of Credit to Other Institutions

Earning an A.A. or A.S. degree under the Illinois Community College Board’s “Model A.A. or A.S. Degrees” or the Compact Agreement between Illinois community colleges and participating universities generally guarantees:

  • Junior standing at the receiving institution.

  • Satisfaction of all lower-level general education requirements.

Students who do not complete a transfer degree may lose credits during transfer. Students who complete the IAI General Education Core Curriculum, whether they earn an A.A. or A.S.receive credit for general education requirements at participating Illinois institutions. Students taking courses under the IAI Major recommendations should confirm with the transfer institution how credits will be evaluated.

Specialized Programs

  • Associate in Fine Arts (A.F.A.) and Associate in Engineering Science (A.E.S.) degrees do not guarantee transfer admission or fulfill IAI general education requirements. Students must complete general education requirements at the receiving institution. Engineering students should consult a Kishwaukee engineering advisor to plan courses.

  • Career/Applied Science Degrees (A.A.S.) are generally not designed for transfer, though some credits may transfer depending on the receiving institution.

Students transferring to private or out-of-state institutions should contact the school directly to verify transfer policies. Academic advisors in Student Services are available to assist with transfer planning and course selection.

Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI)

Kishwaukee College is a participant in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide agreement that allows transfer of the completed Illinois General Education Core Curriculum between participating institutions.  This agreement is in effect for students entering an associate or baccalaureate degree-granting institution as a first-time freshman in the summer of 1998 and thereafter.

To assist students in identifying qualifying general education core courses in the course descriptions are designated with General Education Core areas as follows:

IAI C - Communication

IAI S - Social & Behavioral Sciences

IAI H, HF - Humanities; IAI F, HF - Fine Arts

IAI M - Mathematics

IAI P, LP - Physical Sciences; IAI L, LP - Life Sciences.

The Illinois Articulation Initiative/Illinois Baccalaureate Majors’ Recommendations (iTransfer Majors) describe courses typically taken by freshmen and sophomores for a specific major. These course recommendations are meant for students who are undecided about a transfer school. The recommended major courses are designated in the course and more information about IAI core curriculum requirements can be found at www.iTransfer.org
